Experiencing sadness, loneliness, or grief when you go through a difficult life experience is part of being human. And most of the time, you can continue to function. You know that in time you will bounce back, and you do. But when you are unable to bounce back; your feelings of sadness linger, are excessive and may interfere with your work, sleep, or recreation. These suggest that you may be experiencing clinical depression, a medical condition that goes beyond life’s ordinary ups and downs. Depression ranges in seriousness from mild, temporary episodes of sadness to severe, persistent depression. However, clinical depression symptoms, even if severe, usually improve with professional therapy, medications or a combination of the two.
